Tyndrum Area (Stirling and Argyll) - Mesothermal Gold

The Tyndrum area has long been known to contain significant gold within many of the burns. The Crom Allt is the most commonly one panned by local gold panners today.

The commercial deposit at Cononish is being developed by Scotgold Resources Limited and an extensive exploration programme by them has identified gold veins within the Glen Orchy and surrounding area for further follow up work.

The gold in the veins is extremely fine and is diffiicult to see with the naked eye. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are common together with pink feldspar rims around quartz veining associated with faults. An example of the Cononish vein can be seen in the top right photograph.

The photograph to the lower right illustrates a small scale feldspathic vein which are commonly associated with gold bearing burns in the area.

Large quartz veins also exist in the region which appear to be devoid of gold (Bottom Photograph) and the key predictor appears to be the association of the feldspar with quartz. Lamprophyres are also common in the region and appear to bear a relationship to veining.
