General Considerations Prior to Gold Panning

Ecological and Environmental Considerations

Not all rivers are the same, and the ecology of a river needs to be considered before gold panning should be permitted. This is particularly so with respect to migratory fish such as salmon and sea trout. I have much experience in this field, including having worked with a prominent Scottish angling association, an independent fishing consultant who is a member of the Dee River Trust, and Scottish Natural Heritage to gain access to one river in Aberdeenshire and one in Angus. Indeed, one estate in Kincardineshire is happy to have a second pair of eyes on the estate as they have experienced vandalism of equipment and bridges and have asked me to actively look out for the best interests of the estate.

Land Owner Considerations and Land Access for Gold Panning

It is often useful to meet with land owners, game keepers, farmers, and angling clubs to address any general rules in relation to granting access to land. Typically these can include seasonal limitations to access at certain times during the year, for example during lambing or during the stalking or fishing seasons, parking arrangements, requirements to ensure damage is not incurred, ensuring fish spawning beds are not damaged, and generally ensuring panning is conducted in a satisfactory manner to all parties.

I always try to work with land owners, game keepers, and farmers who kindly grant me permission to pan. Panning locations are kept strictly confidential, and I follow the key principles of the outdoor access code, namely respect for the interests of others, care for the environment, and taking responsibility for my actions.

Not a Road to Quick Riches

Gold panning in the UK is not a road to quick riches. Gold panning in the UK is a hobby and it will more than likely cost you a lot more money than it could ever make you when you add up travelling expenses, and expensive kit such as drysuits. If you're looking for friends and an outdoor life that promotes fitness, sure, have a go at gold panning, but it won't make you rich.
